A Traitor's Escape
A Story of the Attempt to Seize Benedict Arnold After He Had Fled to New York
By James Otis, illus. by George G. White, Young Patriot Series, copyright 1809, 277 pages.
Genre: Non-Fiction/American Revolution
RL: 8th - adult
Oliver Littlefield and David Rhinelander desperately wanted to join the "rebel" army in the fight for independence. Both of their fathers had fallen "gloriously" fighting at Trenton and they wanted to do their part. Their mothers earnestly wished for them to stay at home, being their only children. So, the boys did what they could to aid the Cause. They more than once brought valuable information to General Sullivan who would often tell them they were of more service to him in New York City than if they had been in the ranks. One day they were asked to help in a top-secret mission one filled with danger and, were it to succeed, would bring them great honor. Very soon Oliver and David find themselves caught up in an attempt to capture Benedict Arnold, the man who had betrayed his country. Will the boys succeed in their mission? Or will they be caught and hung for treason against the king of England?
In this fantastic true story you will travel with the boys through danger and excitement! I love reading books that are full of excitement, danger, and intrigue, this book was no exception. It was very interesting to read about some of the "underground" workings during the American Revolution. The fact that this story is based on an actual event makes it even better, because it happened in real life not just in the author's imagination!
