Courage at Sea
By Marguerite Vance, illus. by Lorence F. Bjorklund, copyright 1963, 86 pages.
Genre: Historical Fiction/Titanic
RL: 4th - 12th
Peter Ambler was not an ordinary boy. He wasn't any good at sports and the thought of mountain climbing terrified him! He would much rather stay at home and play one of Mozart's concerto's on the piano. His parents were a little ashamed of Peter, why couldn't he be more like his cousin, Cy? Cy was bold, daring, and very athletic! One day Peter's parents made an announcement, they were going to Europe! Uncle Jeff, Aunt Emily and Cy were coming too; and they would all be travelling home on board the Titanic!! Peter's parents expected him to be pleased, only he wasn't. The thought of sailing frightened him, and besides that he would be made to miss his piano recital! Travel with Peter, Cy and the rest as they travel Europe and ultimately to that fateful day, April 10, 1912, the day the Titanic sank. You will read of many acts of bravery, and of the most unlikeliest of heroes.
I am a Titanic enthusiast and as such, I read everything I can about the subject. Courage at Sea was no exception! It is a very enjoyable, easy-to-read story. My only complaint about the book is that it boarders slightly on being unrealistic. The way the story ended COULD have happened, but it is very unlikely. (Please note that I do love the Titanic and soak up any information about it; thus I tend to be very critical of works of fiction involving the time in history.) Otherwise, I heartily recommend this charming story to anyone!
