And when Cusi leaves the valley to go down to the world of people in order to search for his heart’s desire, Misti accompanies him. There Cusi soon learns to understand the ancient Incan saying, “Grieve not if you’re searching circles.” This is a story that sings the grandeur of the mountains: the wild crags, the canyons and gorges, the lovely pastures and wildflowers and deep crystal pools. More than that, it sings the grandeur of the Incas themselves: their grace and pride and dignity, the greatness that was never defeated but lives on, sacred within their hearts.

Gull number 737 was nicknamed “Spacecraft” soon after he hatched. His birth was reverently observed in the laboratory by Luke Rivers and his ornithologist father, but the tiny gull chick was returned to its parents in the gallery as soon as it was banded. Each of the birds in this small gallery on an isolated tip of Block Island was well known to Luke and his father, after their hours of patient observation. To Luke the beautiful herring gulls were endlessly fascinating as they went about their ritualistic daily habits of preening and caring for their young, and engaged in carefully balanced struggles for power. The young gulls were amusing as they played games, mimicking their elders, and few things equaled the sight of a flock of gulls soaring in before a storm. Much as he loved the gulls, Luke was restless in this fifth summer spent observing and testing the birds. What was the point of all this pursuit of pure knowledge? He was beginning to doubt his father’s wisdom, and he resented his father’s autocratic attitude. Luke had some practical ideas of his own which he yearned to pursue. But mostly he wished he could take a job in the world of important and vital ideas. A national catastrophe suddenly plunged Luke and his father right into the midst of that world of action, and Luke learned just how vital and important pure research can be. Although it was hard to believe that their beloved gulls could be responsible for tragic accidents, it was true; and Luke and Dr. Rivers had the necessary knowledge to help with the solution to the problem. Luke himself discovers something by watching Gull Number 737 that might open up an entirely new concept in the study of behavior. And just as important, he gains a new insight into his father, both as a man and as a scientist.

To her small Eskimo village, she is Miyax. To her pen pal in San Francisco, she is Julie. At 13, Miyax is an orphan and unhappily married. She runs away from her husband's parents' home in hopes of getting to her pen pal in San Francisco. On the way, however, she becomes lost in the Alaskan tundra. With no food, no shelter, and no idea of which way to go, she begins to look hard at who she really is. Is she Miyax, Eskimo girl of the old ways, or is she Julie, a modern, white-American-style teenager? When a pack of wolves begins to accept her into their community, she realizes she must learn to think like a wolf as well. This is the compelling story of a girl searching for answers in a bleak landscape that at first glance would seem to hold nothing.

Going away to school can be both exciting and bewildering, but for Harry Berger it was a very special challenge. For a lively and curious boy who had grown up on a little farm, Philadelphia was full of wonders - streets crowded with people, a horseless carriage, store windows filled with things he’d never seen. And in school there were new friends, a trade to learn, new games to play. But the greatest challenge was that this was Harry’s first encounter with the world of the “hearing” - free from his father’s influence. Harry, like everyone else in his family, had been born deaf, and up to now he had chafed under his proud, independent father’s attempts to keep the family apart from their hearing neighbors. Yet his parents wanted schooling for him, and what Harry learned - both from his teachers and from the other deaf children at his new school - was to bring change for the whole family. This tale of Harry’s discoveries introduces the reader to a happy and loving family and a sturdy self-reliant boy whose days are packed with high-spirited adventure.

Gregor had his Pa’s boat stored the way he had left her when he died three years before. He had gear, which was in good shape, he had strength and determination. All he needed was some paint and caulking stuff and enough credit for grub and fuel. Then he would fish for salmon in Cook’s Inlet in Alaska where he’d lived and fished all his life – but this time it would be as an independent fisherman. The boat repairs took a lot of time and whatever work Gregor did was for his future, he thought. He did well, too, until he tangled with the bully of the fishing fleet and met a girl who thought brains were more important than brawn. A very exciting adventure story where a young man is challenged by wind and weather and danger in the wild waters near Anchorage.
Devil’s Doorstep: by Marian Rumsey, illus. by W. T. Mars, 1966, HB, VVG, very minor wear to corners, 124 pages. - $3.00
Every summer Peter Burke and his parents went to Devil’s Doorstep, a peak over two miles high in the Rocky Mountains. Peter’s father was a fire watcher, and the whole family looked forward to their annual retreat to Devil’s Doorstep Station. Then the summer Peter was ten, Tornado arrived, and the peacefulness of mountainside was shattered. Tornado was a mischievous goat, whose antics, although hilarious, were too often destructive. That memorable summer was further complicated by a long stretch of fire weather, and between the heat and the goat tension mounted. The climax came when Tornado spent a night chewing on the high-pressure fire hose. At that point the Burkes decided that Peter would have to get rid of his goat. What happens on the trip when Peter tries to lose Tornado in the forest takes everyone by surprise. The story of the danger faced by boy and goat together is a gripping one indeed, a story that young people will want to read again and again.

But what would you like to know about the seacoast? What kind of exploring most meets your fancy? In this book, the authors show the reader how to make his own discoveries as the authors range all around the coasts of our country and tour the world of plants, of animals, and of man. They tell where to look for living shellfish, how to calculate the speed of waves, and how to find deserted islands. Haworth Idyll - A Fantasy: by Roberta Trigg, illus. by Margaret Dashiell, 1946, HB, VVG, signed by the author, very minor wear to corners of cover, text crisp and clean, 88 pages. - $8.00
From the foreword:
“Haworth Idyll can perhaps speak only to those whose imaginations spring forward to meet the idea. Always it is fascinating to consider what it could have meant to young girls of the period to have attended that school at Haworth Parsonage, which never existed. In this sketch two children go there as guest and pupils during the year 1844-1845. The child who kept the record of their unique experience was naive, not over-precocious, yet contemplative, and of rare intuition, so that in touching genius she was unconsciously enkindled thereby. To accept her impressions without question or analysis is the only key to what she offers.”

Seventeen: by Booth Tarkington, 1916, HB, rebound, VVG, very minor wear to corners of cover, several “dog-eared” pages, ex-lib, 249 pages. - $5.00
“This is a sweet story, set in the American heartland at the turn of the 20th Century. The focus is the group of people and the very region which created the American nation as the greatest country in the history of the world. The rhythms of life vastly were different a hundred or so years ago, the dreams were more simple, the morality clearer-cut. Anyone reading SEVENTEEN needs to understand that this book is about a time and place now so far away and different from what we have come to know that it could be science fiction. Yet people remain the same, emotions remain the same. As a result, SEVENTEEN holds its value as the prototypical coming-of-age novel. Booth Tarkington was one of the premiere authors of his era and that is the reason why, decades later, SEVENTEEN remains worth reading. It is the definition of a classic.”

Manolo Olivar was the son of his father. Which may not seem like a necessary thing to say. But in Manolo’s case it is. For his father had been Juan Olivar, the greatest bullfighter in all Spain. And Manolo was his son in two special ways: one, he looked just like his father; and two, everyone expected that he, Manolo Olivar, would repeat the success of his father, would be just what his father had been - a fighter of bulls and a killer of death. No one asked Manolo if this future was his choice. He had no choice. And only he knew that aficion, the bullfighter’s unconquerable urge to fight bulls, was not a part of him. The day was chosen, the bull selected for the fight that would establish Manolo’s future. Caught in a web not of his making, Manolo’s struggles to retain his pride, his self-respect, and his independence go far beyond the world of the bullfighters and the borders of Spain. They are the struggles of every boy in the process of becoming a man.

From the Prologue…
The very name ARABIA carries a magic enchantment. There is something almost equally enchanting about the word GAZELLE. They are both exciting, interesting words which stir the imagination. How much more exciting is the country itself – and how much more exciting is an actual gazelle! I discovered this when living in that far-away and mysterious country – that ancient land which has been so romantically famous from far back in Bible days on down through the centuries. Only a dozen Americans had ever been there before me, for only very recently had outsiders been permitted to enter that sacred place of the Moslems. A few of us were allowed to live in the small town of Jidda, the seaport for the holy cities of Mecca and Medina; but all other places were still forbidden to us. The Arabian Government made this exception only because we were the necessary representatives of a friendly country. I had been there for some time, when one Skeeter, a little gazelle, came along to brighten my life – and add a chapter to it…

Paul Manship, born in Africa, assured by his missionary parents that anyone born there was an African, suddenly found his whole world against him. The white people were against the missionaries for educating the Africans so they might be able to handle their independence. The Africans, with the exception of his best friend, Daniel, started painting their faces white and beating drums and chanting “White ants get out.” The workers were dissatisfied with their white bosses and burned and burned their plantations, and the white bosses burned the mission and Paul’s house, where he had spent his entire life. How were they to escape from everyone on the rampage? Daniel, thinking his friend Paul might need refuge one day, showed him a place in the Takula tree and he and his mother and their mission worker, Esther, fled for safety while his father was away. From here they tried to walk to a town 25 miles away, through the jungle, with the rebels, white and black, all around them. A terrifying journey and a daring rescue that will leave you breathless!

These tales truly represent the oral tradition of Spain and the color of her countryside, from the green, moist mountains of Asturias and the barren brown plateau of Castilla to the shady gardens and snow-capped peaks of Andalusia. From several hundred native folk tales, found in various collections and gathered at first hand, the present selection has been made. These stories were told to the collector by the people themselves. They were written in their present form under Spanish skies, often in cities and villages that were the actual places of their origin. The artist who drew the pictures sat on bare, sunny hillsides near Granada, on the quais beside the river Cadiz, and in the sheltered coolness of the Alcazar gardens in Seville reproducing with her pencil the scenes that are the natural background for these tales.

Professor Sherman’s tale of life on Krakatoa is based on scientific fact – and absolute nonsense. Whether his tale is fact or fictions, the author, a good friend of the Professor, leaves up to the reader; but he maintains that every detail is true, no matter how fantastic it may seem!

“Why is everything so difficult?” cried Lalu. “Why should I have to stay in this poverty-stricken village in India and be a farmer when I can become a doctor and help more people?” Lalu’s fierce debate heightened when the letter arrived, guaranteeing him a scholarship. Villagers were starving. The earth was dry and cracked. He loved his schooling and he knew doctors were needed for new India, and this was a wonderful opportunity. Finally Lalu wrote the letter he decided he had to write, hoping they would take his best friend, Ram, in his place.
