By Enid LaMonte Meadowcroft, illus. by Lee Ames, copyright 1957, 247 pages.
Genre: Historical Fiction/American Revolution
RL: 4th - 12th
It was August in the year 1777. Gilbert and Jenifer Emmet had been abruptly wakened; their father wished to see them. What could he possibly wish to see them about, and in the middle of the night? Gil and Jen soon learn that their father is going away, he can't tell them where, and they too must leave Philadelphia. The very next morning Gil and Jen travel to Valley Forge, their father thinks they will be safer in the country with Uncle Benjamin and Aunt Abigail. As time passes the children settle in nicely to the slow country life. Nothing much seems to happen in little Valley Forge. Then one cold, snowy December day there was a knock at the door; General Washington was coming with eleven thousand soldiers! The townsfolk do what they can for the freezing, starving men, but it's just not enough! What the American Army needs is money, good hard money! Gil concocts a plan to get that money, he and his cousin, Danny, must go to Philadelphia! On the way they encounter all sorts of adventures, like trapping a spy and nearly being caught by the Redcoats!
In this enjoyable, easy-to-read story, readers will experience first-hand the suffering and needs of the American Army. You will be filled with pride and patriotism as you read of the tremendous efforts of the townspeople to help the soldiers. This book would be an excellent choice for the younger student, but will still be enjoyed by an adult.
